About Yowie

YOWIE is a design-forward boutique hotel in Philadelphia that also features a curated shop and the Forin cafe. Founded in 2016, YOWIE has grown from a tiny Queen Village storefront into a hospitality-meets-design destination that invites guests to shop, eat, stay, and explore the city’s creative side. Nestled on a sunny corner of historic South Street, a neighborhood block rich in music, art, and makers, YOWIE is a new kind of space to experience Philadelphia from an insider’s point of view. More than a place to stay, YOWIE is the neighborhood’s guest room. A spot for travelers, friends, and anyone passing through. No stiff check-in. No hotel routine. Just a place that feels good to come back to.

YOWIE Hotel

YOWIE Hotel includes a collection of uniquely designed hotel suites filled with colorful furnishings, playful art, and curated pieces from independent artists and heritage makers. Each room has its own personality. Everything in your suite is shoppable. If something catches your eye, you can likely find it in the YOWIE Shop downstairs and take it home with you. We’ve crafted each space to feel more like a friend’s guest room rather than a hotel chain cookie-cutter space.

Invisible Service

At YOWIE, we keep service quiet and virtually invisible, staying here feels like visiting a thoughtful friend’s home in the neighborhood. Instead of a traditional front desk or room service, we offer contactless check-in with a personal access code, and our friendly team is just a text away if you need anything. This means you can enjoy a private, uninterrupted stay and truly make yourself at home.

Don’t worry, we still provide plenty of warmth and personal touches, from handwritten welcome notes to a “Did You Forget Something?” drawer with essentials, all to make you feel cared for during your stay.

YOWIE Shop & Cafe

On the ground floor, you’ll find the YOWIE Shop and Forin Cafe (our cozy neighborhood coffee shop). The YOWIE Shop is an extension of the hotel’s design spirit, an ever-evolving collection of modern home goods, art objects, gifts, and collaborations with independent makers that reflect YOWIE’s colorful, playful ethos. YOWIE was even named “The Coolest Shop in Philadelphia” by Bon Appétit in 2019! Just next door, Forin Café (open to guests and neighbors alike) serves up locally sourced breakfast and lunch, think quality coffee, pastries, salads, and sandwiches made with ingredients from local farms. It’s a great spot to mingle with locals, meet a friend, or simply start your morning before heading out into the city. YOWIE’s shop and cafe make our space more than just a place to sleep, it’s a vibrant community hub where you can sip, shop, and soak in Philly’s creative energy without ever leaving the building.

Meet the Founder: Shannon Maldonado

Shannon Maldonado, YOWIE’s founder, infused her dynamic design expertise and hometown pride into every aspect of the hotel, shop, and cafe. Shannon Maldonado is the visionary co-founder behind YOWIE’s unique blend of hospitality and design. A Philadelphia native with over 12 years of experience in the fashion design industry, Shannon honed her eye for style at major brands like Ralph Lauren, American Eagle Outfitters, and Urban Outfitters. In 2016, she left her corporate design career in New York and returned home to start YOWIE as a webshop and then a series of pop-ups and installations across the city. Her knack for eclectic curation and building community quickly gained attention, and by 2019, Bon Appétit had crowned YOWIE “The Coolest Shop in Philadelphia,” celebrating its impeccably curated yet approachable style.

In 2023, Shannon, alongside partners Everett Abitbol, Valerie Abitbol, and William Vessel, brought a longtime dream to life by expanding YOWIE into a boutique hotel above the shop and cafe. She designed every part of the nearly 10,000-square-foot space herself, from the layout of the 13 hotel suites to the furniture, color palettes, and artwork sourced from local makers. The hotel is YOWIE’s most ambitious project so far, combining Shannon’s passion for design, hospitality, and community in one place. She sees it as a destination within the city and a source of pride on South Street, a street where she found inspiration as a teenager.

Her goal was to create a space that feels like a friend’s guest room. Something intimate, personal, and filled with thoughtful details. Through the shop, YOWIE continues to connect design and community through events, artist exhibitions, and collaborations with brands across the country. Her focus remains steady: to build spaces that encourage curiosity, comfort, and connection. Places where people feel like they belong.
